Make a Denim Dog Leash

I have 3 pairs of old jeans that are too beat-up to wear anymore. I saw an idea online to make dog leashes from them. Considering we have Colby on the leash all the time at home, I could use a few more around the house. I ordered some swivel snap lobster claw hooks and got to work.

These instructions will result in a 4ft leash. If you want a longer one, you can cut material from the other leg of the jeans.

Cut the hem off and cut up the inside leg all the way to the crotch. Keep the hem! There's another project with that later.

Cut straight across from the crotch.

And cut down the other side.

The thigh area is going to be bigger than the ankle area, obviously. Find the spot where the material starts to widen and mark it with a pin. I used a cutting board and rotary cutter to take the extra material off. This makes the width of the material 8.5". Well, for me it did.

Fold the material in half and iron.
Open and cut along the seam.
Pin the two pieces, right sides together. Sew to get one long piece of material.

Fold the long edges in toward the middle. Iron flat.
Fold the short edges over, iron, pin, and sew.
Fold in half again lengthwise. Iron. Sew. Feel free to use a thread color that you want to get rid of. I used burnt orange.
Attach the hardware. I really wish I bought heavy duty clasps. This one feels a bit weak. Thus, the dangers of buying online.
Make the handle.

Sew the hardware and handle down with Xs for extra strength.
Enjoy.
